Kepter privacy, for Setapp members
This page covers Kepter as you get it through Setapp: what it reads, what it keeps on your Mac, and what goes to Setapp.
The short version
Your files never leave your Mac. Kepter reads them where they sit and keeps its notes on your Mac. There's no account with us and no billing. Kepter's own code makes no network calls in this edition unless you turn on Share Analytics. The Setapp Framework, which every Setapp app includes, does talk to Setapp, and that's covered below.
Your files
Kepter reads the files in the folders you choose, in place. It never copies them or uploads them, and never moves them on its own; it moves one to the Trash only when you ask. When you choose Move to Trash in Kepter, it moves the real file to the macOS Trash, where you can get it back.
Reading happens on your Mac, using Apple's own frameworks: PDFKit for document text, Vision for text in images and scans, Speech for what's said in audio and video, and Apple's on-device models on macOS 26. If your Mac's speech recognizer can't transcribe a language on-device, Kepter skips the transcript rather than sending the audio anywhere.
What Kepter keeps on your Mac
For each file, Kepter keeps 3 things: a record of what it read (the text, plain-words nicknames, dates, amounts), a thumbnail, and the path back to the original. It never keeps a copy of the file itself.
All of it lives in Kepter's own folder in your user Library, at ~/Library/Containers/app.kepter.keep-setapp. The records are encrypted, and the key is in your macOS Keychain. The thumbnails and transcripts are plain files in that same folder, so scrolling stays fast. Nothing in there is your original.
Kepter also keeps an activity log, kepter.log, in that same folder. For each file Kepter read, it lists the file's name and size, what Kepter was doing to it, how long that took, and how much memory Kepter was using. It also names the folders Kepter watches and any errors it hit. It holds no text from inside your files. It leaves your Mac only if you choose Send Feedback… and send the email with the log attached.
Billing and your account
Setapp handles your membership, your payments, and your account. Kepter has no sign-in, no password, and no billing of its own. Settings shows whether your Setapp subscription is active, and that status comes from Setapp. Questions about your membership, payment, or cancellation go to Setapp, not to us.
What the Setapp Framework reports
Kepter includes the Setapp Framework, the code every Setapp app includes. It checks with Setapp that your subscription is active, and when you open the drawer, Kepter tells it you used the app. Setapp's documentation describes what the framework sends as Usage Data, Performance Data, and Device Information, and its privacy manifest also lists a device identifier and your Setapp user ID. Kepter never hands the framework a file, a filename, or anything it read, and doesn't choose what's in those reports. Read Setapp's privacy notice for how Setapp (MacPaw) handles it.
Outside the Setapp Framework, Kepter makes no network calls in this edition unless you turn on Share Analytics in Settings, under Privacy & Security. It's off until you do. When it's on, Kepter sends anonymous usage events to TelemetryDeck, like finishing setup. Each one carries the app and macOS version, whether your Mac has an Apple or Intel chip, screen size and scale, language, region, time zone and text direction, dark mode and accessibility settings like Reduce Motion, which day and hour you use Kepter, the date you first opened it, how many sessions you've had, how long they last and how many days you've used Kepter, which edition you have (direct or Setapp), details of Kepter's own build, like whether it's a test build, and a random ID this Mac makes so it counts once. Finishing the first sweep adds how many files it found, as a range like 100 to 999. It never carries a file name or anything from your files. Crash and performance summaries go out under the same switch: if Kepter crashes, freezes, or uses too much CPU or writes too much to disk, it sends a summary once macOS reports the problem, which after a crash is the next time Kepter opens. The summary has the type of problem, its exception and signal numbers and up to 8 places in Kepter's own code, with no file name, no path and nothing from your files. There's no update check. Kepter Help opens a page in your browser, and Send Feedback… opens an email in your mail app; nothing goes out unless you open the page or send the email.
This website
kepter.app sets no cookies and loads no third-party scripts. Its own scripts remember, for that browser tab only, which site sent you here, and add that site's name to the download links. When you press a download button, the site counts the click, with the button's words and the kind of device: Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows or other. The site is served by Netlify, which may log standard request information, such as your IP address, as part of serving the page.
If you use Email me the link on kepter.app, the address you type goes to mail.kepter.app, which we run, and from there to Resend, our email provider, which delivers that one email. We don't keep the address. Resend keeps its record of the email, with the address, for 30 days. If you tick Email me when there's news about Kepter, we also keep the address, the date and which form you used on our own Cloudflare storage, for news about Kepter only, until you unsubscribe. Every email we send to an address on that list has a one-click unsubscribe link, and that link deletes the address. You can also email support@kepter.app any time to be removed. To stop abuse, the form keeps a scrambled code of your IP address for 2 hours and, once a link is sent, a scrambled code of the address for 1 day. Neither is your address or your IP address, and neither is used for anything else. We also count each use of the form by kind of device, the site that sent you and whether it worked, with no address or IP address in the count. Resend and Cloudflare may log standard request information, such as your IP address, as part of delivering it.
If your Mac is an Intel Mac or on an older macOS, the download page asks whether you want to hear if that changes. If you leave your address there, we keep it, the date and which form you used on the same storage, for news about Kepter only, until you unsubscribe. Every email we send it has the same one-click unsubscribe link. Nothing goes to Resend when you do that. The page also sends whether your Mac is an Intel Mac or on an older macOS, which goes into the count and is never stored with your address, and the form keeps the same 2-hour scrambled code of your IP address.
If you're on Windows, the card on kepter.app asks whether you want Kepter on Windows. If you leave your address there, it goes to mail.kepter.app, which we run, and we keep it, the date and which form you used on the same Cloudflare storage, on a separate Windows list. We use it for one thing: to email you once if we make a Windows version. There's no date, and we may never make one. Nothing goes to Resend when you do that, and we send no email now. If we ever write, the email carries a one-click unsubscribe link that deletes the address, and you can email support@kepter.app any time to be removed. The form sends that you're on Windows and the site that sent you, which go into the count and are never stored with your address, and it keeps the same 2-hour scrambled code of your IP address. We see how many addresses are on the Windows list and on the news list, as numbers only.
Deleting everything
Open Kepter's Settings, go to the Advanced tab, and choose Erase Kepter’s Data…, then Erase Data. It erases everything Kepter stored, including which folders it watches and its activity log, then quits. Your own files stay exactly where they are. To remove the app itself, open Setapp, click My Apps, find Kepter, click the arrow next to Open, and choose Uninstall.
We don't sell your data
And we never will. There's remarkably little of it to sell.
